US military aircraft carrying 70,000lb of baby formula on the rescue to frustrated mums

A shipment of 35 tons of baby formula has arrived Sunday in Indianapolis on a US military aircraft from Germany to address a nationwide shortage.

The shipment will provide enough formula for 9,000 babies and 18,000 toddlers for one week.

This is part of Joe Biden’s drastic step of invoking the Defense Production Act to speed production of more baby formula supply and authorize its import from abroad.

The first batch of formula fly-in originated from Switzerland and was trucked to US Air Base in Germany.

About 45% of baby formula products were out of stock across the US last week.

The shortage has caused major disruptions and frustration for some desperate American families.

The total amount of formula arriving in the first round of "Operation Fly Formula" is the equivalent of 1.5 million doses of eight-ounce bottles.

The critical shortage of the product came after a February recall by Abbott worsened COVID-related supply chain issues among the product’s manufacturers.
