Ukraine has said that Russian forces fired five X-22 cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea toward Kyiv on June 5. The X-22 missile, also known as Kh-22, is a long-range anti-ship missile developed during the Soviet era. It was intended for use against US Navy aircraft carriers and carrier battle groups, with either a conventional or nuclear warhead. Russia’s defence ministry said that it targeted tanks and other military supplies donated by the West in Kyiv on June 5. Russia’s defence ministry said the strikes, first since April 28, on Kyiv outskirts destroyed T-72 tanks supplied by Eastern European countries. However, Ukraine’s railway authority said no military equipment had been stored there. The strikes come after Putin lashed out at Western deliveries of weapons to Ukraine, saying they aim to prolong the war. Putin had warned that Western military deliveries to Ukraine will be destroyed by Russian forces.
