Portugal: German medical aid arrives in Lisbon amid COVID spike

A German military plane carrying medical aid for Portuguese COVID facilities landed in Lisbon on Wednesday, as the country became a hotspot of the new so-called UK variant of the virus which considered more contagious than the initial variant.

A team of reportedly more than 20 German doctors, nurses, and infectious diseases specialists arrived in Lisbon along with 50 ventilators and 150 hospital beds.

The third wave of the coronavirus has caused a tremendous strain on Portugal's healthcare service and intensive care units.

Portugal has registered 731,861 cases of COVID-19 and 13,017 related deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
