The government on Wednesday formally sealed the Rs 48,000 crore deal to procure 83 Tejas light combat aircraft from state-run aerospace behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. The deal is the biggest ever in the indigenous military aviation sector.
Tejas, manufactured by the HAL, is a single engine and highly agile multi-role supersonic fighter aircraft capable of operating in high-threat air environments.
Ahead of the opening of Aero India show in Bengaluru, the defence minister had inaugurated inaugurated a new plant at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bengaluru to double the production of India's indigenous fighter jet - LCA Tejas.
