North Korea has one of the world’s biggest militaries, but size isn’t everything. Behind the parades and nuclear tests, North Korea has a big problem – an air force full of obsolete – really obsolete – planes.
Economic and diplomatic isolation has put the North Korean air force in a bind. Unable to get new planes or the parts needed for them, North Korea has been forced to improvise, maintaining a large fleet of 1950s-era fighters like the MiG-17, 19, and 21.
North Korea has attempted to manufacture its own aircraft, but these are merely copies of propeller-driven planes like the An-2 and Cessna 172 utility planes.
Although North Korea’s artillery force is formidable, it would quickly lose any conflict over its skies, thanks to its use of these archaic planes which are completely incapable of fighting modern wars. And since sanctions won’t end anytime soon, North Korea will continue to field some of the worst, most outdated weapons in the world.
