What is that white thing on the back of SR-71? Well, that's the LASRE pod. LASRE, or linear aerospike SR-71 experiment, was a NASA project, in which 2 SR-71s were used as a testbed to find out and provide flight data to Lockheed Martin, so they can determine the combination of their X-33 lifting body with linear aerospike engine, to start the groundwork for a future reusable launch vehicle. LASRE was basically a small model of X-33 lifting body, with 8 thrust cells of aerospike engine, and was mounted on housing known as "CANOE," which was filled with the helium and hydrogen. The entire apparatus combined was called "POD," and was mounted on the back of SR-71. The entire pod was 41 feet in length and weighed 14,300 lb. The goal was to determine how a reusable launch vehicle's engine plume would affect the aerodynamics of its lifting body shape, at specific altitudes and speeds. 7 flights were conducted in 1997, and 3 in 1998. Information from the LASRE experiment helped Lockheed Martin to maximize its design for a future potential reusable launch vehicle.
