The Hungarian Air Force Intercepts Enemy Aircraft During NATO’s Air Policing Mission

NATO's Baltic Air Policing Mission, stationed at the Šiauliai Air Base in Lithuania, was handed over to the Hungarian Air Force. A task designed to protect the skies of Allied countries from risky aviation traffic, Baltic Air Policing is one of many that are carried out during peacetime. Throughout the Alliance, air patrols are conducted every day of the year. The Hungarians have launched three intercepts to stop Russian military aircraft from flying into international airspace since taking over command. NATO air policing aircraft scramble whenever unidentified air traffic either fails to send an identification code or respond to hails from air traffic controllers.
