Ukrainian troops have freed thousands of square kilometers of seized land after Russian soldiers crumbled in Kharkiv Oblast in response to a Ukrainian counteroffensive.
Faced with a dramatic Ukrainian counteroffensive, Vladimir Putin's men are abandoning their guns and attempting to leave.
The Ukrainian military has conquered dozens of cities in Kharkiv Oblast, including the strategic Russian military base of Izyum, which Moscow has controlled since April. During a withdrawal in which they reportedly had just "hours" to flee for their lives, Putin's soldiers reportedly abandoned weapons and equipment.
Russian lines of defense have crumbled catastrophically as troops try to withdraw in the face of encirclement by Ukrainian forces.
Mark Savchuk, a Ukrainian journalist and coordinator for the Ukrainian Volunteer Journalist Initiative, has ties inside the Ukrainian military. He said the Russians had abandoned the strategic city of Izyum, leaving behind "vast quantities" of weaponry.
He said, "They were utterly shocked and amazed. Thus, they did not anticipate [the attack]. We advanced dozens of kilometers every day, and Izyum was in grave danger of being encircled. Izyum was a crucial logistical location for Russia; hence vast quantities of equipment were kept there. They realized that they had hours until we had what is known as fire control on the retreating roads, which meant that we would be firing anything [Russian] on the road."
