'Philippines military plane DEADLY CRASH leaves more than dozen dead'

A Philippine military aircraft crashed in the southern province of Sulu after missing the runway on Sunday.

At least 17 of the troops on-board were killed and around 40 were rescued from the burning wreckage, many were young military officers who had been deployed to the area after graduating.

The aircraft had around 90 people on board, the three pilots survived but were seriously injured.

Billows of smoke could be seen rising from the crash site in Patikul from nearby villages.

The Lockheed C-130 Hercules was one of two ex-US Air Force aircraft handed over to the Philippines as part of military assistance this year.
