Philippine President Marcos Jr defended his decision to allow a larger US military presence in the country. This comes despite China’s fierce opposition and warning that it would “drag the Philippines into the abyss of geopolitical strife”. Manila announced in early February that it would allow rotating batches of American forces to indefinitely stay in four more bases. This is in addition to five Philippine military camps earlier designated under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA).
