It has been confirmed that Queen Margrethe has been discharged from the hospital and returned to Copenhagen's Amalienborg Palace for recovery.

The news came a week after the monarch underwent "extensive" back surgery at the city's Rigshospitalet hospital.

A statement later confirmed that "the operation went according to plan" and that Margrethe's condition was "good and stable under the circumstances."

While the queen continues her recovery at home, her son Crown Prince Frederick will continue to serve as regent.Shortly before she was admitted to the hospital for surgery, Margrethe shared her full confidence and trust in Frederick's ability to rule.She also spoke about her decision to strip her four grandchildren, offspring of her second son, Prince Joachim, of the title of His Royal Highness. They are 23-year-old Nikolai and 20-year-old Felix, Joachim's sons by his first wife Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, and 13-year-old Henrik and 11-year-old Athena, whom he shares with Princess Marie, whom he married in 2008. As of Jan. 1, the siblings are no longer called His or Her Royal Highness, Prince or Princess. Instead, they are now called the Count or Countess of Montpezat.
