In July 1996, Matra and British Aerospace received the Conventionally Armed Standoff Missile, or CASOM contract. Their Storm Shadow missile was an improvement over concepts from several defense giants. The "Apache" anti-runway cruise missile is the design inspiration for the Storm Shadow. France placed an order for 500 of these missiles in January 1998 after their manufacture contract was signed in February 1997. The missile is known as "Storm Shadow" in Britain and "SCALP-EG" in France, which stands for "Système de Croisière Autonome à Longue Portée, Emploi Général." For English speakers, "Long Range Autonomous Cruise Missile System, General Purpose." The missile's first successful launch from a Mirage 2000-N occurred in France at the end of December 2000. A Tornado flying from the BAE Warton fired the first shot in May 2001 for Britain. When it comes to the Storm Shadow's first operational usage in combat, RAF Tornados did so in 2003. Then, French Air Force Rafales fired the Storm Shadows at targets during the 2011 military intervention in Libya.
