Forming the tip of the spear in the carrier strike group, the F-18 Super Hornet can wreak havoc on targets in the air, on land, and at sea. But what makes it such an essential aspect of maritime strike power?
The answer to that question is simple: the massive inventory of weapons it can carry.
For air targets, the Super Hornet can employ weapons like the AIM-9 Sidewinder or AIM-120 AMRAAM, or if really close, its 20mm chain gun. For targets at sea, the pilot can launch Harpoon missiles, and for missions over land, the aircraft can deploy various missiles and bombs from the SLAMMER missile to laser and GPS-guided bombs.
The Super Hornet can also fight in the electromagnetic spectrum by deploying HARM missiles meant to seek enemy RADAR emissions and can also carry a towed decoy to trick incoming surface-to-air missiles. The vast range of weapons the plane can take has a variety of passive, semi-active, and active seekers meaning that aircrews can tailor the combat load to virtually any situation the plane could encounter.
