The plane, an II-76 military freight jet, crashed and caught fire while attempting to land in the Russian city. Five people were hospitalized with injuries.

Separately, Russia's defense ministry was reported as claiming the plane's engine failed during a training flight. The ministry provided no information on crew fatalities.

It comes only days after Ukrainian soldiers shot down a Russian Su-25 jet, capturing the pilot. According to British intelligence, the pilot admitted to being a former Russian air force Major who worked as a Wagner military contractor and flew multiple flights throughout the battle.

Fighting in the east has escalated, with Lysychansk's governor declaring Friday that Ukrainian soldiers repulsed a Russian onslaught on the city's southern outskirts, the last wholly Ukrainian-controlled city in the Luhansk area.
