北歐五國中，除了瑞典，其他四個國家的人口都不到1000萬，丹麥、芬蘭、挪威的人口只有500萬左右。人口基數也就決定了其軍隊的人數不會太多。挪威軍隊現役士兵大約為1.6萬，戰時可以動員預備役也不過13萬人，其與大多數的歐洲國家一樣，走的是精兵模式。
